I kniha bez konce může mít význam

The Hill Station bych doporučil všem, kdo někdy kdy Shimlu navštívili. Někomu se toto město líbí a někdo jej zatracuje. Nechte se unést představivostí a přečtěte si, jak je popisuje autor známějšího románu Obléhání Krišnapuru. Možná pak změníte názor.

Co jsou to Hill Stations neboli Horské stanice?

Pro všechny ostatní, co nebyli v Indii a kteří netuší, co je to „Hill Station“.

Britská komunita koloniální Indie špatně snášela úmorná období horka. Budovali proto letní sídla na vrcholcích kopců ve střední Indii, na pobřeží i na nižších hřebenech indického Himálaje.

V těchto horských stanicích vedli podobný způsob života jako ve své rodné zemi. Stavěli tu hrázděné domy, kostely, kluby i internátní školy.

V takovýchto „hill stations“ panoval čilý společenský život zejména během období veder. Pořádaly se tu četné společenské dýchánky a taneční plesy. Do některých z nich se na konkrétní část roku stěhovala celá státní administrativa a stávaly se na několik měsíců v roce sídlem vlády.

Jednou z takových horských stanic je i Shimla.

Mezi ostatní známá letoviska patří třeba Mt. Abu v Rádžastánu, Dalhousie v Himáčalpradéši, Nainital a Mussoorie v Uttarakhandu. Na jihu Indie pak Ooty či Kodaikanal v Tamilnádu nebo Munnar v Kerale.

Cesta do Shimly

Ještě počátkem listopadu 1903 trvalo putování do tohoto horského střediska v indickém Himálaji téměř dva dny. Později jej zkrátila železnice na jeden den a nyní sem autobusem vyjedete za pár hodin. Přečtěte si ukázku, jak taková cesta koňským povozem dříve vypadala.

Nowadays the railway goes all the way up to Simla, but before the turn of the century it stopped at Kalka. The rest of the journey, some fifty-eight miles of it up into the hills, still had to be accomplished in a two-wheeled cart drawn by a couple of vigorous Kabul ponies under the auspices of the Mountain Car Company, as it was called … a devastating last lap of your journey if you were coming to Simla to repair your health.

The best that could be said for it was that this two-pony vehicle, the tonga, was itself an improvement on the sedan chairs and litters that had been the invalid’s lot in yet earlier days before the building of the road.

Shimla dnes

Hotely a nové betonové stavby se rozlézají do daleka po okolních kopcích. Shimla je prostě příliš populární.

Až se budete kodrcat rozbitou silnicí směrem do výšek nebo nadávat, že Shimla je příliš západní, zkuste si představit, jak se tu asi žilo, když tu sídlil místokrál.

Pro Brity byla dlouho Shimla útočištěm před horkem indických planin. Trávili zde dovolenou a byla také sídlem vlády. Dnes sem míří tisíce indických turistů.

Dodnes si zachovala ducha Británie se svými hrázděnými domy, obchodní třídou Mall a křesťanskými kostely.

Ovšem kdekoliv jinde mimo centrum najdete pravý nefalšovaný indický bazar.

Almost immediately they began to climb into a maze of low hills. For a while the roofs of Kalka remained visible below, but then the folds of two hills closed together like curtains and they were seen no more. The road, which was little more than a cart-track, wound this way and that hugging the side of one hill after another, dipping occasionally but then continuing its gradual ascent once more.

In no time Emily had lost all sense of direction, one hill looked so much like the next. The mountain ranges she had seen from the train were no longer visible and the only signs of cultivation were a few terraced plots on the bare ridges. Nor were there any trees to be seen, indeed nothing but interminable red slopes of rock and shingle covered with scrub burned brown or yellow by the sun. Emily had been expecting lofty pines and cedars and had to struggle not to feel disappointed.

… From time to time they paused at a way-side but to change ponies, then went on again immediately. But at last they became aware of a smell of warm pines and the air grew a little fresher. Presently signs of green foliage appeared and an occasional clump of trees. On several occasions a tonga or bullock cart passed them going down towards Kalka but empty of passengers or baggage and once Mrs Forester remarked that at this time of year almost all travellers would be going in the same direction as themselves; only in September and October would the downward traffic begin.

Emily gazed out over the steeply sloping countryside where far below them the road they had already travelled could be seen, a white ribbon passing back and forth across the hillside as it descended. Down there one of the tongas which had passed them earlier could be seen as a dark speck dragging behind it a curtain of white dust many times its own size; soon it met four even smaller specks of men on horseback setting up a dust-cloud of their own as they climbed; then each party disappeared for a few moments into the dust stirred up by the other.

A pár praktických informací na závěr

• The Hill station je nedokončené dílo. Autor tragicky zahynul a tak je text přerušený uprostřed kapitoly.
• V češtině román nikdy nevyšel.
• Knihu si užijete mnohem víc, pokud jste Shimlu sami navštívili, plahočili se autobusem nahoru po kroutící se silnici, sháněli marně ubytování uprostřed sezóny nebo bloudili po Mall a bazaru během mlhy v období dešťů.
• Pokud vás téma indických Hill stations zaujalo, doporučuji výbornou knihu The Magic Mountains: Hill Stations and the British Raj, která se životem a problematikou horských stanic podrobně zabývá.
• A malá poznámka na závěr – Shimla je hezká a má zajímavé a fotogenické okolí. Jen já sám měl vždy smůlu a byl zde právě během mlhavých deštivých měsíců. Kvalita fotek tomu tedy odpovídá.
